will the real sassy lime please stand up?

that's right, ladies and gentlemen. i'm feeling pretty good about myself right now. i just got back from walmart, where that store (or evil corporation, whichever you choose) paid ME 12 cents to take a bottle of Ken's Lite Italian Salad Dressing off their hands. truly. i am the master of coupon clipping. (no, not really, my muum is; i bow at your feet, coupon guru). :)

just had to share my great find! $2 off coupon; and the dressing only cost $1.88. :)

The Sassy Lime

some of you may have wondered what the name of my blog means; most of you probably haven't. but in any case, i'm going to tell you!

when i was in high school, i was in marching band; all 4 years. the first 3 years, i was a part of the drum line; we were called the pit. we didn't march, b/c our instruments were too heavy/bulky to move around, but our drum instructor wanted them as a part of the band and drumline. so in any case, i played the xylophone, marimba, etc....we had lots of other fun percussion toys too, and one year timpani. SO, this is all background.

every year the drumline made a shirt; i don't remember if all the sections did this or not, but the drumline always did. on the front was some kind of graphic; always drawn by one of our bass drummers, eric (he later went to art school, haven't talked to him since) -- so anyways, on the back, listed by section, were all of our names. one year, the guys who made the shirt decided to do palindromes for everyone's names. (palindromes, for those who might be racking their brains right now, read the same forwards and backwards). so this took them quite a while to come up with; there were probably 40 or so in the line at that time......i had no part in figuring these out. just thought i'd put that out there, b/c i didn't have the brain power for it. ;) my palindrome-name was Emily's Sassy Lime. yes, backwards it reads Emily's Sassy Lime -- so anyways, a few months later i was getting an email address for the first time - this must have been my freshman or sophomore year in HS. and i couldn't think of anything good for awhile, when finally i decided on emilysassylime@whatever.com. before you protest, i realize that emily sassy lime DOESN"T read backwards the same; it's missing one s. but you can't use apostrophes, so it wouldn't have looked right. so it's a quasi-almost palindrome. that was more than 10 years ago, and it's just stuck with me. so my husband helped me figure out my blog name; and he felt this was the most catchy version of Emily's Sassy Lime.

so you see, it has nothing to do with limes or sassiness really. it has everything to do with ME! haha. it's all about me..... j/k

now you know! (and knowing's half the battle....)

So i was visiting all my normal blogs today, ho-dee-hum....and i get to dooce, read through it of course; turns out she opened up comments today (they are usually CLOSED) - -and LITERALLY, there were 1214 comments posted. WHAT?!?!?!? one thousand, two hundred and fourteen comments!?!?!?!?! i couldn't believe it. i mean, i know dooce is big, but i'm thinking, after the first 50 or so, does anyone *really* have the time to keep reading about people's choices for working or staying home with kids? the subject interests me as much as anyone else, but sheesh. i was blown away.

anyways, on to me ;) : am feeling considerably better today (than yesterday) we had some rain, and lots of wind last night -- which explains why my had was so bad yesterday (human barometer, remember?) -- i was awake last night for a long time until i decided i needed to take something; acute meds for the migraine. once i did that, i drifted off to sleep quickly. i'm still feeling pretty good, 12 hours later. however, due to many days of feeling BAD, there are dishes stacked up, sheets need changing, food needs buying, etc. you get the message.

and today's the last day of february - hooray!!! bring on spring weather!!!

monday, monday.....so good to me

i've hit a blogging block. not that i ever write about anything exceptionally interesting or .....coherent. but yesterday i hit this block and thought, 'i can just write though it...' yeah, right. yesterday's entry was bleh. i want to feel like i've accomplished something when i blog, not that i sent some nuclear waste out into the world wide web. you know what i mean?

20 minutes later.....ah. i decided to join another group online; it's called readers anonymous. being in bed 'resting' with migraines so much, i find i'm reading much more than i ever have before. i check out probably a dozen books from the library, and go there FREQUENTLY. but i need some ideas for good reads. otherwise i just pick out stupid stuff. (not on purpose, but because i don't have many 'favorite' authors.). .... while i was living with my in-laws this past summer, my mother in law helped me find lots of great reads. now, on my own......i'm struggling! so i'll have to tell you how that goes. i'm excited about it.

in case you're curious, the other online group i'm a part of is called the chronic pain support group. it's been more than a year that i've had these migraines; and for those of you who don't know my history, i have a migraine every day, from when i wake up in the morning to when i go to sleep at night. i'm not fishing for sympathy, but that's why i joined the group, so i could have some 'friends' who understood firsthand what i was dealing with.

that's me on this monday! i'm gonna go rest in bed and read. literally. this = my life! :)

it's SUNDAY!

nothing really new. headache has been better and worse, varying all day. so stupid. we did have a yummy dinner tonight; from the freezer cooking extravaganza 2006 -- funeral potatoes. i've mainly been laying in bed resting all day, whenever i wasn't at church. whew. what a day.

february is almost over, which means warmer weather is on the way. it was in the low 60's today, which means SPRING has nearly SPRUNG! i wore a pink dress to church that my mother-in-law made for me last summer; it was a bridesmaid dress for my brother-in-law's (her son, my husband's brother) wedding. and let me tell you, i got more compliments on that dress than i think i ever have on any single article of clothing! i know you read this, dear mother in law; they love the pink dress!

signing off for now friends,
emilinguini

Friday, February 24, 2006
thank goodness it's friday!

we had some friends over for dinner last night; it's too long since we've seen them, so i was really pleased they could make it. they're a couple, him i'm very good friends with, and her i only know b/c he's been dating her for the past 7 months. love her, tho of course. anyways, so it was super fun to hang out with them; i made a roast in the crock pot for dinner, then we played a game of scattergories, ate some apple pie she made with ice cream, and them went to temple square for a movie. such a fun night.

however, i spent all of yesterday cooking and cleaning and running errands....ugh. i'm wiped out completely today. so here i lay, in bed. resting. no fun, but obviously what my body needs. tonight we're to go to a dinner party for my husband's colleagues at school. i need to get feeling better for that!

so the dr.'s appointment....it went well, and instead of trying another medicine right now, we're going to do another test. i haven't had any tests done since a year ago, when we did the MRI, EEG, EKG, etc. sooooo a week from today i'm going to have a spinal tap done. this is meant to check the pressure of my spinal fluid around my brain (if it's too great, it could be causing these headaches), and to be sure that there's no infection in the fluid. again, if there's an infection, some types are benign except for the symptom of a constant headache. AKA me.

i'll be honest with you, blogworld, i'm more than a little nervous about the spinal tap. when he first mentioned it, my hands started sweating. i said something like 'i've heard that spinal taps are rather painful. is that true?' he said, 'no, not at all. it's like drawing blood. sometimes it goes well, other times it takes more tries and is more uncomfortable.' i'm thinking. uh huh. i sure hope you're right. of course i'll give you a full report after the fact. ;)

p.s. for a hilarious commentary on women, go see Snickerdoodles' post today!

What's for Dinner Wednesday?

***update**** my sister has posted a freezer cooking recipe/summary at her site!! go check it out!

Well, we're going to try this again. Although, hardly anyone actually wrote in the comments what THEY were having for dinner, but just commented on what I was having for dinner. Not the point, people! :)

Sooooooooo head on over to Krisco at Crib Ceiling, when i was posting this, her what's for dinner wednesday wasn't up yet, but it is her creation! besides, lots of good stuff to read there in any case.

on to business. :) i haven't decided what's for dinner tonight (*possibly meatloaf), so i'll just tell you what we had for dinner last night! we had a fabulous and easy soup. recipe is courtesy of my sister (noticing a theme here? do i cook anything original? no.)
it's tortilla soup. here's the ingredients:
1 can black beans, undrained
1 can corn
1 can chicken broth (or just some)
1 can tomato sauce
1 can green chiles
some bell peppers, chopped up
some salsa
some chicken
Heat and stir together.....serve with tortilla chips, cheese and sour cream.

Here's what i love about this recipe; it's still good even if you don't have all the ingredients. we had vegetarian soup last night b/c i didn't want to cook any chicken. :) we also didn't have any bell peppers, so we didn't have those either. my sister's kids don't eat anything spicy, so they don't use chiles or salsa. get the idea?

please leave me your meals in comments! tell me about what you had last night, or what you're having tonight! would love to hear your ideas.....

for all you moms out there....

I got this joke in my email today; can't help but think
that some of you moms would get a laugh out of it. :)

I was out walking with my 4 year old daughter. She picked up
something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth.
I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do
that.

"Why?" my daughter asked.

"Because it's been laying outside, you don't know where it's
been, it's dirty and probably has germs," I replied.

At this point, my daughter looked at me with total
admiration and asked, "Wow! How do you know all this stuff?"

"Uh," I was thinking quickly, "All moms know this stuff.
It's on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don't
let you be a Mommy." We walked along in silence for 2 or 3
minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new
information.

"Oh, I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test,
you have to be the daddy."

"Exactly," I replied back with a big smile on my face and
joy in my heart.

a few random thoughts.......

1. internet explorer sucks. i like how you can bring up your favorites in a huge long list on the left hand side of the screen, but i do NOT LIKE how it crashes while trying to bring up a website. IE, this is WHAT YOU DO! it's your job, your purpose for existing! and you can't do it? it's not like anything else is eating up the RAM or ROM or whatever. this is a one man show. but no more. i have left you forever, to use Firefox. (my husband is somewhere jumping up and down with glee) -- if anyone knows how to bring up a more convenient list of my favorites in firefox (besides a drop-down box), please tell me.

2. around salt lake city today, i noticed not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR pickup trucks pulled over on the side of the road. .what's up with that? in all the same distance, i only saw one car. weird.

3. did freezer cooking with my totally awesome sister today(*my other sisters are ALSO totally awesome, don't misunderstand) -- we made and froze cheesy potatoes with ham, shepherd's pie, pork chops w/apples, crispy pork chops with apricot jam, and on top of all that wonderfullness, she gave me some gardenburgers! SO exciting is my life.

4. the freezer cooking entirely wore me out, so i'm laying in bed with the laptop writing this. hoping that my husband comes home soon!

5. some of you (who've read this blog for a while) will remember that we are trying to get through the winter without turning on our heater....due to psychotic electric bills. say that out loud 'psychotic electric'. huh. anyways, temperatures have dipped low (10 degrees) but we haven't turned on the heat! it's great. the apartment isn't that cold; except at night. that's why we have lots of blankets.

6. this is something funny i heard about; people vote on what they want him to wear. they're calling him a real life ken doll, but don't worry, it has nothing to do with androgyny or plastic hair.

the previous entry...

was written by my husband; in HIS special language :) it's a perl script.

i should've posted on this sooner, b/c i know it doesn't make any sense. i'm not being hoity toity here, it doesn't make any sense to me either! I had a horrible migraine all weekend, and last night we were in bed, and i was feeling pathetic. he was keeping me company and writing code for his website. he, being the fabulous husband he is, asked if there was anything he could do to make me feel better.

i said, 'can you write me a perl script to make my head feel better?' so he wrote that for me; the previous entry. it didn't work. but after a good night's sleep, i am finally feeling a little better. :)

so maybe it did work after all......

i don't know if any of you saw the news about the westminster dog show this week, but here's the deal; i've never seen an uglier dog! the winner, that is. his name is rufus, and he is simply not an attractive dog......in my humble, uninformed opinion. a few photos for your perusal.

apparently his head was perfectly egg-shaped, so that helped his chances....but seriously, does that explain THIS?!?!?!:

that's rufus with his trainer....and.........dost mine eyes deceive me? no, i'm pretty sure they're french kissing. that's bad form, i say. there are lots of cute dogs out there. most of the other dogs i saw in the news stories about the westminster dog show were WAY better looking than this dog. in any case, have you seen the movie Best in Show? MAN that is a funny movie. if you're looking to laugh, rent it. it's by the same ppl. who did waiting for guffman and a mighty wind.

Thursday Thirteen Banner
Image from: http://wordplay.lastpromise.com/

Thirteen things I do EVERY DAY!

1. eat breakfast (most important meal of the day, don'tcha know?)
2. do pilates - this is not because i'm a health/exercise nut, though i wish that were the case. this is actually because my back was injured in middle school (hit by a DISCUS in the lower back), and this is the only thing i've found to keep me relatively pain-free.
3. say my prayers.
4. read the scriptures.
5. take absurd amounts of prescription medicine; trying to shake chronic migraines.
6. sleep more than 9 hours; see #5 above
7. tell my husband how much i love him
8. curse my lazy self for still having the CHRISTMAS WREATH on our front door. can't bring myself to take it down until i've made a new one, for SPRING! so there it sits, mocking me.
9. drink copious amounts of water
10. wonder how much a live-in chef costs. must start saving for that NOW! ;)
11. read my friends' blogs and laugh. (See sidebar, these ladies=funny)
12. read dear abby online. why? i don't know, it's completely inexplicable.
13. check craigslist for the salt lake valley. why? also no answer for this; not like i have $ to burn, or like anything in the free section is any good! :)

There you have it, my Thursday 13~! thanks for stopping by; leave your name in comments and i'll come visit yours! also please go check out my MOM's new blog!!!

What's for Dinner Wednesday?

Well, for the 'real' what's for dinner wednesday, trot on over to Crib Ceiling; the lovely graphic is from Krisco, and so is this idea! in any case, i just had to try it out. i'm longing to know; what are you having for dinner tonight? or what did you have last night? And if you actually MAKE it, let us know how; post a recipe on your site and we'll visit. :)

tonight we're going to have chicken parmesan. i do *love* this dish, but the real reason we're having it tonight is because it's snowing. for some roundabout logic, please try to follow this; it's snowing, and b/c of the weather change, my migraine is worse than usual. that means that the last thing i want to do is spend time in the kitchen cooking. i want to spend ALL the time in bed, in the dark, reading or watching a quiet movie. but i digress. so the chicken parmesan is ALREADY MADE. my sister, in her older-sister-infinite-wisdom, had me over a month ago to do freezer cooking. we cooked stuff, we froze it. now i have meals to simply warm up when i need a quick meal (i.e. when my head hurts more than usual). she is so brilliant. other than that, i don't really remember how we made it; chicken, rolled in bread crumbs, and mozzerella cheese...that's the general.

to be honest, i'm most looking forward to DESSERT! (what a surprise) - we're having leftover cheesecake from last night....it turned out much better than i thought. i really liked it. so, as promised, here's the recipe for the SUPER-EASY, no bake cheesecake!

Two 8 oz. packages cream cheese, softened for 30-40 seconds in microwave
1 1/3 cup powdered sugar
1/2 TBSP vanilla

Mix these three ingredients until blended, then add
2 cups Cool WhipMix again until blended, then put into a pie crust (I prefer pre-made Nilla Wafer crusts) and refrigerate at least an hour. Top with fresh or canned fruit topping.

thanks for leaving comments :)

happy valentine's day!!

well, we got a new laptop in the mail yesterday; the 'new' one we got at christmas was shocking us! so spencer called the help line, and they said they'd just send us out a new one. probably they don't want us getting electrocuted. heck, i don't want to be getting electrocuted, either! sooo of course i'm looking forward to dinner tonight; i've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, but this is the perfect occasion;

also i made a cheesecake this morning; before you start being impressed, let me emphasize that this was a super easy recipe. i've made a cheesecake before using a normal cheesecake recipe, and this experience today was nothing like that. so i'm just hoping that the cheesecake tastes good. if it does, i'll post the recipe. if not.....eh. i'll whine about it tomorrow. :)

a few of the greatest valentine's posts i've read today are these; snickerdoodles; definitely something for everyone here :)
also over at daring young mom, a discussion on suppressed passionate looks in movies. then over at Paris daily photo, there are some great photos of paris; and what's more romantic than that? (btw, he ALWAYS has great photos) i highly recommend these posts! maybe after my romantic date tonight, i'll have more romantic things to write about, but for now; go check out their sites!

monday again?!

what a surprise! it's 2:30, fair readers, and i'm gonna be honest with you. you know what i've accomplished so far today? basically nothing. i'll list everything, though, to be fair.

1. drove my husband to work
2. stopped by victoria's secret on the way home to pick up something for free (not shoplifting!, they sent me a card in the mail with a free offer.)
3. found $1 in change at the bottom of my purse. stopped at the taco stand for a (very authentic) taco.
4. ate it in my car, b/c the taco stand isn't in a very good neighborhood and it's cold.
5. drove home.
6. read through all the blogs and websites i read daily. also read all my email.
7. put some new blog names on my sidebar! i love doing that. i doubt if anyone clicks on them, but at least i'm publicly declaring how much i love your site!
8. writing a blog entry.

so obviously, pretty lame.
things i NEED to do today;
1. dishes
2. clean off kitchen table
3. a load of laundry
4. clean up front room.
5. finish unpacking from last week's babysitting (umm, can you say pathetic?)
6. take a shower. yes i'm serious.
7. wrap husband's v-day present(s).
8. make a cheesecake for our v-day dessert tomorrow night.

welcome to the life and times of emily. the sassy lime. the theme of many blogs i read today was valentine's day plans. since that's obviously the cool thing to do, i'll just join in! (can't handle the peer pressure man)

my husband and i are going out to dinner tomorrow night; at a thai restaurant called thaifoon (clever, huh?) - we have reservations, so i'm hoping that'll work out without too much waiting. then we'll come home and have some sparkling cider (We don't drink alcohol) and homemade cheesecake (assuming i get it made), and enjoy our evening together! pretty low key. what are your plans, friends? anyone doing something EXCITING?!?! i'd love to hear about it. (or even if it's not exciting, tell me about it anyway) :)

so romantic....

one of my friends (who lives in ohio) told me about this the other day... check out the link and you'll see that white castle is featuring candlelit dinner (with servers) on valentine's day..reservations are required. i can't think of anything less romantic. i don't think i've EVER met a woman who enjoyed sliders - men seem to love it, but seriously, the consistency of their burgers reminds me of pureed worms. some of you fair readers may be from areas where white castle hasn't spread yet - consider yourselves lucky. they feature cheap yet disgusting fast food fare.

la link, for your surfing pleasure:

well it's WEDNEDAY

i finally figured out the intricacies of joining the thursday 13 - actually i tried it, messed it up, and my husband fixed it for me. (thanks honey!) in any case, i have the blogroll on my site now. :) impressive.

tonight we're going out to dinner; to meet with some other recipients of the same award that spencer got......hopefully they won't be boring, it won't be boring, and even if it is, do i care? clearly not. free dinner, and i hear it's good food... who am i to complain? it's like my dream world.

my sister and her husband made it back safe and sound from cancun. i'm sure they're wishing they were still there. but hey, what're you gonna do? the vacation's gotta end sometime, right? probably they were glad to come back, maybe they missed their kids or something? who knows. i'm just sayin' ...cancun? sunshine? oceans? it's basically my fantasy world. hopefully the landing won't hit 'em too hard. at least it's not snowing out! what this REALLY means is that my babysitting duty is finished. (didn't you know it's all about me?) whew. good thing, too. i'm exhausted.

Adam and Eve

Soo i have another brazilliant story about my darling niece:

we're sitting at the table, and she's enjoying her after school snack, when she looks at me, totally serious, and says 'tell me the story of adam and eve, and why they got kicked out of the garden of eden. for REAL.' (as if i'm going to tell her some false version? i don't know) anyways, so i proceed to tell her the story, adding as many details as i can, b/c it seems like it's kind of important to her, right? not exactly.

when i finish i tell that's FOR REAL the story. and she says, 'ok. that's how the bible stories tape told it. i just wanted to make sure they were telling it right. for real.'

she also came home with her shoes SERIOUSLY muddy. from what, you might ask? why, playing mudball with one of her friends at school! i'm not sure what all the rules for this game entail, except that you throw mudballs at one another (of course).

so i tell her she's gonna have to clean her shoes off - she wears a uniform, and has basically one pair of shoes to wear to school with her uniform. so we discuss the best shoe cleaning procedures, and i hand her a (cleaning) toothbrush. she looks at me and says, 'you're not gonna make me as a slave, are you? i just have to clean my shoes with this, right?' i tell her, 'no you have to scrub the entire floor with it. :) ' hee hee. of course not! she's funny. what *will* i blog about after we leave here?

a retrospective on Jackie Chan

Well, let me start by saying this; i'm not a huge Jackie Chan fan (ooh rhyming!), i've only seen 3 of his movies, and two of those are the most 'mainstream' ones; shanghai knights and shanghai noon.....the third i saw last week; my husband loves to see new movies. so of course, since we're visiting my sister's house (while babysitting my niece), this presents the AMAZING opportunity of viewing their entire DVD collection within 9 days. no j/k. but kind of not. ;)

so anyways, on this evening, we were watching one of their movies, called 'the accidental spy'. during the course of the movie, jackie chan is attacked while at some kind of bathhouse, or day spa. incidentally, this leads to him fighting many a bad guy wearing only a towel, then later (horror of horrors) NOTHING! don't even allow the mental image to enter your mind! anyways, it's of course very funny. he runs through a market, using various things (towels, fans, even tambourines) to cover his private parts.....(this is not the funny part) -- the funny part is that later, he sits his nude tushie down in a vat of spices - one cheek in a yellow spice, and the OTHER cheek in something green. i was laughing so hard i was crying by this time; my stomach actually hurt. so, right at this moment, my sister's mother in law calls.

(unfortunately this calls for another little side note) - i know her mother in law reasonably well. we used to live next door-ish from them when i was 5. so in any case, she's a great lady, and unfortunately *her* mother has died, and she's there, visiting somewhere in california. very sad. but she's calling to tell me the funeral is coming up, so she won't be home to take the other niece and nephew for the weekend (as planned)........

soooo anyways, the MIL calls, and my husband pauses the movie.....so i'm talking to her, trying to sound sympathetic, taking down a message for MY mom (who's currently watching the other niece and nephew).....suddenly i look up and see - frozen on the screen- jackie chan's retreating rear end, colored half yellow and half green. here i am trying to have a serious conversation - searching for words of condolence - while trying to stifle laughter. i mean, jackie chan looks like he belongs in a football game somewhere - and to be honest, i've never seen a naked tushie coated with different colored powders - it was more than i could handle. i had to get off the phone, and quick.

i wrapped up the phone call posthaste, and burst out laughing. my husband was of course clueless as to the humor - especially since i just got off the phone with my sister's MIL, discussing her recently deceased mother. basically, it was a classic movie moment. need i say more?

whoa; seriously messed up

k, as usual, i tried to do something involving 'code' and i've screwed it up --- soooo disregard any weirdness you see on my site -- once i can get my husband to fix it up, it'll be smoooooth sailing.

;)

Thirteen Things going on in my head!

1…. $1 at a thrift store goes a long way; we got 2 stuffed animals (Snakes) and a paperback book.
2. if PBS kids is HER favorite show, it's MY favorite show, too! (arthur is the bomb)
3. why do i feel more attractive with long(er) hair? i don't know. i wish it would grow out already.
4. i need to check the mail; both here where i'm baby/house sitting, and also at my house. that stuff is probably piling up...
5. husband and i are going to see aida this weekend (an opera) - and we have a babysitter coming over to watch the wee one; here's the thing.....i don't know how much she gets paid...darn.
6. what are we going to do for dinner tonight? all i know is, it better be spectacular....or at least an improvement over last night.
7. the weather was nice(r) today; can't wait til spring is here
8. i'm (once again) unsure if this 'code' is going to work -- did i do it wrong? chances are high
9. surprisingly, 'buster's postcards' is MUCH less well received than arthur; don't ask me why, they seem equally rad to me
10. music i feel like listening to; frank sinatra
11. movie i feel like warching to: funny face - ahhh audrey hepburn
12. placde i wish i was; cancun! i'm still super jealous (ok not really jealous, but you know) that my sister is there! and i am here in rainy cold utah!
13. last but not least; person i wish was with me; here and now.....my husband!!! he's still at school, and i'm keeping my fingers crossed that today isn't a long day!

dinner = disappointing

i'm laying on the sofa, typing this with one finger; my head hurts immensely. i'm sure this is a result of our rainstorm today.........my darling niece got hungry, and instead of homemade pizza, we had tony's pizza pouches. she took one bite of it and stuck out her tongue. in other words, it was not well received. she made herself a sandwich. :( so sad.

well, it is time for me to sign off ---

til tomorrow (or whenever i get back to write)
