schtuff

So here is an update from my little corner of the universe. it's been 2 weeks now and i've been off the Emsam -- the side effects are going away. my sleep is still getting back to normal. once in a while i'll wake up at 3 or 4 and not be able to get back to sleep, but it's the exception instead of the rule now. thank goodness. that kind of nonsense is unacceptable.

so the headache clinic told me to call yesterday and they would start me on the new preventative....soooo i call them up. leave a message of course. they call me back and say that my dr. doesn't want to start me on anything until i come in for an appointment. ooookay. i'm thinking why did you tell me to call? i say that i have an appointment on the 30th of june and since i'm in UTAH i can't come in any sooner (are you even looking at my chart or what?). so i'm somewhat irritated because this just continues my time being off any anti-depressant. which, frankly is somewhat sucky. i've been on an anti-depressant for 10 years. the last 3 years the dosage has been double the previous 7 years. so to be on nothing ... it's difficult to stay on an even keel.

so this little video cheers me up. it's a video of jason castro on american idol. talking about and singing memory from cats.

my favorite part (ok, the part with the talking is much better than the singing IMHO...) is at about 1:25 when he says 'this is kind of a popular song'.

ahahahahaha. so funny. i laughed till i cried.

mostly because that's just about the understatement of the century. ooh hoo hoo.

I ran into a great article -- would be especially interesting for those who love music. it's mostly a social experiment, and gave me a lot to think about. go here and check it out. tell me what you thought about it.

this made me think --

1) would i have stopped to listen? i think so. BH (before headaches)? probably not. i would probably have been in too much of a hurry to slow down. but these days, i've got plenty of spare time. listening to music may increase my pain, but i've found that there are things worth extra pain, and a little extra beauty is well worth it.

2) why are we so quick to judge a person's worth by their location and surroundings? why do we assume a street musician is not as worthwhile as another person -- or is it just the discomfort of not wanting to acknowledge those who are worse off and begging for money?

a quote for today:

"You know, sometimes it is the artist's task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left." -- Itzhak Perlman.

if you're intersted in reading the story behind this quote, go here.

i'm thinking a lot lately about how much i can do with what i have left -- the person i am and the capabilities i have with these migraines. how does this quote apply to you?

CD review

I think I read about this on Shannon's site. I could be wrong. There was an opportunity to receive and review a Michael W. Smith Christmas CD. My blog had the required number of visitors.

So I emailed the record company, but I figured I had been too late. Because they only had 150 CDs to give away. So how surprised was I when I opened a large envelope in the mail a few days later?!

This is my first review; my husband says I've hit the big time now, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case. I'll let you know if I ever do hit the big time. You all will be the first to know.

So the CD is by Michael W. Smith, and it's his new Christmas CD, called 'It's a Wonderful Christmas' (not to be confused w/the movie....It's a Wonderful Life.)

I should tell you that I am not a big Christian music listener. I have heard Michael W. Smith before, but don't own any of his other CDs. This CD appealed to me a great deal -- the tracks alternate between instrumental and tracks w/vocals. I love that, but it could be disappointing to someone who adored Smith's voice and bought the CD for his singing. I hope not; the instrumental tracks are really well done, and give some down time to process the lyrics. There are some arrangements of old standard Christmas carols, and there are even more new songs written about the birth of our Savior and God's love for us.

After a few listens, I can see that some of the tracks emerge as favorites, and I can see myself listening to this CD throughout the year. I will most definitely enjoy listening to it many Christmases to come. This would be a great hostess present, or gift for someone you attend church with. The songs are well-written, and I find myself humming the tunes and thinking of the words.

My favorite track would have to be 'Christmas Day' featuring Mandisa. to check out a few of the tracks on this CD, click on the square button ------> over there. Let me know what you think!

today i turn 26.

my husband's been giving me presents the past couple of days, and there's one more for me to open tonight. :-) he's very sweet. he also cleaned up the apartment and washed all the dishes this morning (!) in preparation for having people over tonight. and because he knows i LOVE having everything picked up and put away.

we're planning to go to red robin with some friends and family, and then afterwards back to our house for cake and ice cream. yummm.

not to put a depressing cast on an actually happy day, do you ever look at the number and think to yourself how different you thought your life would be at that age? i guess i do. i figured i'd be married, but i also figured i'd be teaching piano and possibly have a child by now. it's so interesting how life works, isn't it?

spencer got me 2 cd's - a michael buble one (i'd been hearing good things about) and the city of angels soundtrack. i used to have the soundtrack, and it got stolen out of an ex-bf's car a long time ago. i LOVE this soundtrack.

harry connick jr.

you guys are so sweet. thanks for all the well-wishes.

ok, i'm taking a break from the TX coverage to tell you about the fabulous night i had last night; my husband won a sweepstakes from Sony credit card - (they're having another one, if you want to check it out)... he got to choose 30 of his friends to take out for dinner, and then to a concert by a Sony artist (we chose harry connick jr.) -- and then after the concert we all got to MEET harry connick jr. seriously. i know some of you might be hyperventilating at this point - please calm yourselves.

i don't have any pictures yet, but we'll get some from the sony ppl. sometime soon, and i will FOR SURE post them - there is a picture (somewhere out there) of me, my husband, and harry connick jr. wow. ok, back to the story.

so dinner was delicious; we went to fleming's and i had steak, mashed potatoes, some creamy cheesy spinach, and then for dessert they brought out creme brulees -- they were so creamy and rich and there were berries on top....i could go on and on about the food, really.

then it was on to the concert.

it was fabulous; the big band was there, and they were superb. harry had a trombonist friend (whose name i don't remember) on stage as well. the music was energizing, and the rhythms were tight. it was a great show. afterwards, we went upstairs and all got to meet harry connick jr.! crazy. he signed cd's for us, and answered our questions. sony had a professional photographer there taking candids, and also posed photos of ____ and ___ with harry (fill in the blank). he was really nice, seemed laid-back. it was neat to get to meet him after the show; i would have loved to have had time to ask more questions. he mentioned a little bit about his musical influences on stage, and i'd love to hear more about that, and who he listens to now.

in any case, it was a marvelous night. we don't have any photos yet, but once we get some, i'll be sure to post them (or links). :)

the Soundtrack of my Life

i ripped this one off from Walking Katetastrophe, a blog i've been reading (and loving) lately.

if my life was a movie...

if my life was a movie, what would my soundtrack be?

so, here's how it works:
1. open your music library
2. put it on shuffle
3. press play
4. for every question, type the song that's playing
5. when you go to a new question, press the next button
6. don't lie and try to pretend you're cool.

opening credits: "Two at a Time" by Guster -- very chill. not one of my favorites by them, but hey i guess i'm not choosing, right? :o)

waking up: "Train Wreck" by Sarah McLachlan -- hahaha. funny b/c when i have to get up early for something, it often feels like a train wreck - ask my hubby! but in all seriousness, i love this song. i love pretty much all of her songs. this song is from afterglow, one of her newer albums. best line? -- 'in your sweet embrace all my pain's erased'.

first day at school: "Next Year, Baby" by Jamie Cullum. i adore this song, but must take issue with his idea to 'spend less money on shoes' next year. if anything, i strive for constant growth in my shoe budget! if you like jazz, norah jones' style, you should check this guy out. he's great. what does this have to do with the first day of school? ummm we'll say i've given up before i started - and i'm just lookin' to next year. :)

in love: "Long way Down" by Guster (again). get it? long way to FALL in love? huh?

fight song: "Have a Cigar" by Pink Floyd -- this does seem to have some fightin' words.

breaking up: "Maddest King of Love' by Big Bad VooDoo Daddy. 'the maddest kind of love is a love you know won't last'. what more needs to be said?

prom: "Hello, Goodbye" by the Beatles.

life's ok: Appassionata Sonata in F minor op. 57 (mvt 3) by Beethoven (performed by Vladamir Horowitz). man, how can life NOT be ok when you're listening to Horowitz playing the piano?

mental breakdown: "White Ladder" by David Gray. i wonder if we have anything else by him. or where we got this one. weird. however, the phrase 'white ladder' brings to mind a stealthy escape from the sanatorium (perhaps sheets used for the 'ladder'?) and strait jackets. perfection.

driving: "Only You" by Harry Connick Jr. This is a GREAT driving song, if only because it's laid back and relaxing. sigh. i guess i'd rather dance w/my hubby to this one than drive, though. if i could choose. 'you're my dream come true, my one and only you.'

flashback: "Crazy for the Girl" by Evan & Jaron. i don't know where this song came from either. but i DO know that it came out sometime ..... 5+ years ago (?) so that's perfect for a flashback. :)

getting back together: "El Condor Pasa (If I could)" by Simon and Garfunkel. i do love me some S&G, but this is not one of their best (IMHO).

birth of child: Piano Trio in d minor by Faure, performed by the Roth trio. this whole thing seems a little... anxious. i'd rather have something soothing and/or happy to represent the birth of a child. can i have a recount?

wedding: "Your Winter" by Sister Hazel. no, dude it was october. we got married in october. btw there's way too much i'm sorry, pain, and hurting in this song for a wedding song. again, we need more upbeat, lovey-dovey type music for this one.

final battle: "Tonada de la Luna Llena" by Marta Gomez. this is like if the final battle of my movie was a dance-off. sweet! my spanish is rough, but i'm pretty sure this song is about a full moon.

death scene: "Reluctant Hero" by Cheri Magill. a great song from a great singer. 'it's time that i resign as your reluctant hero'. we got her cd when we saw her live at BYU - we enjoyed her set and liked her CD even better.

funeral song: "You Don't Know Me" by Harry Connick Jr 'and anyone can tell; you think you know me well. but you don't know me. kind of a depressing funeral song. i hope that at least someone feels they know me.

end credits: "Scarborough Fair/ Canticle" by Simon and Garfunkel -- now this is a fabulous closing credits song. doesn't get any better than this.

This was a super fun meme. but then, i love music. if you're reading this (and want to play), i tag YOU!

let me know you did it in the comments so i can be sure to check it out!
